Engineering Facts

Did you know…engineering is the application of science to designing things whether its buildings, machines or anything that’s manufactured or man-made? Ingenuity is usually involved, which means being clever, resourceful, creative and inventive.

So when you think about it, engineers are really cool because they are the ones that can take an idea and make it real! Just think about some of greatest inventions created by engineers today and throughout our history. For example:

  • Did you know the snowboard was invented by an engineer? Awesome dude!
  • Ever play on a slip-and-slide or slide down a waterslide during a hot summer? It was a civil engineer that invented the slippery part!
  • Did you know engineers designed the shoes you’re wearing now? Engineers designed running shoes in order to distribute our weight evenly throughout the whole foot so that we can walk, run and play comfortably!
  • Ever ridden a roller coaster? All roller coasters are designed by engineers! The world’s largest steel roller coaster – The Millennium Force – reaches a height of 310 feet, which is longer than a football field! The coaster is also the world’s fastest at 92 miles per hour – faster than a cheetah! Takes a lot of ingenuity and skill to create something that big, fast and safe!
  • Can you guess what engineer George W. Ferris created? The first Ferris Wheel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1893!
  • Did you know golf balls have dimples to help the ball fly further? An engineer discovered that.
  • Engineers also built high speed trains in China that can reach speeds up to 220mph. Now that’s fast!
Engineering has so many different branches, with the most common being Civil Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Industrial Engineer and Electrical Engineer. Engineers have really cool jobs like working on the space station and creating 3-D special effects in movies. In fact, everything you see below was created by an engineer…
